A linear encoder is a highly accurate device used for measuring linear displacement or position. It plays a crucial role in numerous industrial and technological applications.

Linear Encoder
At its core, a linear encoder consists of two main parts: a scale and a readhead. The scale is a precisely marked element, often in the form of a graduated ruler. It can be either a glass scale with fine engraved lines or a magnetic scale. The readhead is the sensing component that moves relative to the scale. It uses different principles such as optical, magnetic, or capacitive sensing to detect the position on the scale.

Optical linear encoders are popular for their high precision. They work by shining a light beam onto the scale and detecting the interference or diffraction patterns of the light as it passes over the markings. This enables extremely accurate position measurements, often with sub - micron resolution.

Magnetic linear encoders, on the other hand, utilize magnetic fields. The scale has a magnetic pattern, and the readhead detects the changes in the magnetic field as it moves along the scale. They are known for their durability and resistance to environmental factors like dust and moisture.

Capacitive linear encoders operate based on the change in capacitance between the readhead and the scale. They offer good accuracy and are suitable for applications where non - contact sensing is required.
